Some individuals have difficulty making rent and utility payments: Canadian Mental Health Association-Cowichan Valley Branch (CMHA-CVB)’s Rent Supplement (RS) program supports individuals during such crises. This is a flexible, equitable program with clear administration processes and financial controls. CMHA-CVB Client Service Workers are responsible for ensuring all guidelines are followed for disbursement.
RS offers non-emergency financial support for expenses related to rent or BC Hydro. The maximum an individual can request is $300.00.
The RS program supports low-income individuals aged nineteen plus and struggling to pay their monthly payments. We support clients living in market housing or at risk of losing their accommodation when they cannot make the complete payment and are not receiving other forms of provincial rental assistance.
The process begins when a community member attends Warmland House Shelter to identify their need. A CMHA-CVB Client Service Worker meets with the community member with the required documentation to discuss the situation, assess the financial situation, and support the individual as best possible. In addition, individuals are connected to other community resources and support through warm referrals as needed.
A biweekly Warmland Shelter Housing Committee meeting discusses and approves the RS requests.
